T-Online Venture Fund, the €100 million fund managed by Deutsche Telekom’s VC branch T-Venture, has reported an investment in sones. The German database technology company raised an undisclosed (“single-digit million”) sum in this second round of financing. sones will use the funds to develop its product to market maturity. It will be looking for additional employees, mainly for software development and sales.

sones’ object-oriented database management system can directly link relevant information from complex unstructured data volumes. The technology is based on concepts and algorithms for overriding existing database structures allowing the system to manage and structure data like the human brain: by cross-linking. Links, connections and correlations between information are directly established, without the indirect route via tables. Data is then stored in the respective, newly developed file system.

The company claims that its technology allows for new standards in terms of scalability and performance. It certainly managed to convince the German telecom giant. “sones impressed us with its innovative technology and its approach to question the status quo, thereby opening up completely new opportunities for data management,” stated Christoph Schmidt, senior VP of Deutsche Telekom’s Personal Social Networks division.

sones is currently working on expanding its technology, including the related file system. The first full version of the object-oriented database management system is planned for market launch by the end of this year. A software development kit will enable software developers and partners to influence the development and make changes to the system. sones is therefore inviting software developers and potential partners to register for the preview and partner program via its website. They will then receive the developer version free of charge and can give feedback for future developments. For this purpose the company is currently using a web services based tagging and recommendation system.

“The system can be adapted to the respective requirements in the areas of e-commerce, social networks and portal/content solutions“, says Alexander Oelling, head of new business development at sones. To do this, the company counts on the cooperation with software partners to integrate the product into their websites.
